Day 8 of 10 Writing FayTown Calling

Yesterday was a two part day. The first part was actual writing. I worked on two sections and added about 1,500 words. I still have several of these sections as Needs Work but that’s because I haven’t had a chance to go back over them and make sure I’m happy with them. The second part was last night, and involved no writing. Not a best practice by any means, but I worked out several issues that had been staring me in the face, including adding a major moment to a story arc that will be huge, a big enough deal that I’m going to need to go back and foreshadow it.  It also made me consider how many words I’m willing to go over 125,000. On the one hand, it felt like I didn’t get anything done because I, literally, added know words. On the other, I had no idea…

Day 7 of 10 Writing FayTown Calling

Woah, sorry I’m late with this. I was up til seven and then slept late. Very late. Later than I have in a long time. Let’s all just agree not to ask… Anyway, it went well last night. I finished two sections, including one that I created on the fly. A lot of people compare outlining to pantsing, well that’s how I write when it comes down to it. I outline, I know what is happening, and then something comes along and just shoves its nose in everything. It’s a good scene though, and it gave me ideas for more. So, that’s my update for today. I lost some time and am probably going to lose some time tonight, so I’m going to write right now as much as possible.

My Review of Skin Game

I have to admit, I’ve been a bit worried about the Dresden Files. It started with Turn Coat, which was one of my least favorite in the series. I don’t know what it was, it just never scratched that itch I have for the Dresden Files. Then there was Changes, which was good, but the whole point of that book was to be purposely out of sync with the tropes, tone, and style of the rest of the series (hence the name, Changes). Ghost Story was a mix of really bad and really good. I thought Corpsetaker was an odd villain to revisit, but she/he/it really just seemed to serve as a backdrop for Harry’s out of body experience and flashbacks, where the story really shined. Cold Nights was good, but it had a few problems for me, I could take it or leave it. So, yeah, I’ve been a bit worried… Not anymore….

Day 5 of 10 Writing FayTown Calling

I had nine sections to go over and I did five of them, including one that I had no idea what to do with and had to make from scratch. It went well and I’ve added about 5,000 words to the story, as well as moving three of the sections from Mess or Needs Work to Happy. One of the five is still Mess (because it’s five in the morning and I’m tired) and the other is Missing Something. No idea what, but that’s the reason for the label. I was very happy with the sections I moved to Happy. I was, well, let’s just say I was concerned with their quality. That’s where most of my work went today, making them better, making them flow. Tomorrow’s goal is to complete the rest of what I wanted to do today. It will probably included looking at this last section, moving it from Mess to…
